Are you receiving the error “Couldn’t Open the Workbook” while trying to open any excel file from a trusted location in Excel Services?

Besides the error being very helpful, its likely its going to be 1 of several potential errors.

The clue with my particular one was deep in the SharePoint logs, I came across:

Cannot open database "WSS_Content" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'domain\user'.

Low and behold, there is the root of the error!

Following the “Configure Excel Services in SharePoint Server 2013” article at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219698.aspx it appears that when Excel services was configured, the excel service account was not granted permission to access the content database.

 

The solution?

Outlined in the same article! (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219698.aspx#proc1)

A little bit of Power shell :)

$w = Get-SPWebApplication -identity http://<WebApplication>
$w.GrantAccessToProcessIdentity("<Domain>\<Username>")

 

After that, success, Excel workbook opens fine!
