IE8 bug fixed!

A while back i blogged about how SharePoint quick launch wasn't rendered correctly via IE8.

Well today the bug report got updated and has been resolved with the release of IE8 RC1.

I have tested it on IE8 RC1 on Vista which came out today and it appears to be fixed.

However that being said, IE8RC1 is not out yet for the Windows 7 version. So I will re-test then and verify.

MOSS & Windows Server 2008 Core R2 (Windows 7 Server)

image

With the release of Windows Server 2008 Core R2, I decided once again to give the installation of SharePoint another go.

My original attempt on build 6801 came to a end with the following error message:

clip_image002

So now armed with Beta 1 (Build 7000) I decided to give it another try., but alas no luck. It seems Microsoft have made some “enhancements” which now even prevent images in applications being rendered.

When trying to launch setup, I'm now greeting with this message:

I’ve sent off a couple of emails to people who may know how to get past this set-back. However without such a subsystem, it may in the end prove futile to Install MOSS 2007 x64 on Windows Server 2008 Server Core R2. :(

Keep checking back for progress!

Bug Submitted!

As per my previous post, Here is the link to the Bug Report I have lodged with Microsoft.

A bit of a doozy bug report, its a rendering problem caused by CSS enhancement from code generated by SharePoint…. Is it an IE or SharePoint Bug? :)

To get a second opinion I consulted with another SharePoint MVP, Box Fox who suggested because it is a IE8 “issue”, lodge it with IE but stress that is it to do with the current version of SharePoint . That way if the need to pass it over, they can.

So there we go, our first bug submitted in relation to IE8 and SharePoint though the eyes of Windows 7!

Server Installed!

Over night I set up a Windows Server 2003 in Virtual PC to be a dedicated server for this blog.

InitalSharePoint7ServerInstall

By having a dedicated SharePoint installing, it gives me the groundings to provide the best out of the box experience of SharePoint though Windows 7.

So with that, Lets take a look at what the default intranet home page looks like though IE8.

MOSSHomeIE8

As you can see, the Interface of IE8 has changed a little, its more smoothed out and pastel.

The first thing which comes to mind is the quick launch on the left hand side.

Windows 7 / IE8 Windows Vista / IE7
IE8QL IE7QL

As you can  see there is a noticeable difference with the html formatting which is being rendered differently.

Why I here you thinking, well I suspect it is due to the CSS improvements in Internet Explorer 8 which can be found at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc304082(VS.85).aspx. More CSS compliance is a great thing and its something many web developers have longed for.

So with that, I suspect it is a SharePoint related problem on how it handles its style sheets. Time to submit a bug to hopefully get a hoxfix created!

Welcome to my Windows 7 Beta 1 Experience Blog.

It is though here that I hope to blog about my experience with Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 8 when used with SharePoint and share it with the community.

2009 is shaping up to be a massive year with many products coming out to public beta or being released, such as Windows 7, Office14, SharePoint14 and much more!

Keep checking back to get my experiences with when it comes to dealing with SharePoint and Windows 7!
