Loopback Bug / “feature” - Getting 401 when browsing a SharePoint site from the local server?

The other day, when trying to browse to a SharePoint site locally on the server, I found that i would be asked for my credentials 3 times, then end up with a 401 error. Strange I thought! Considering that this had all worked previously.

The article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861 described the problem with IIS and has 2 possible work around. It appears that this KB article, although for IIS 5.1 and 6 can also apply for IIS 7 and this server is running Window Server 2008 & IIS 7 (Soon to be Windows Server 2008 R2 RC.. more on that later)

I tried both workarounds, but in the end there was only one which fixed my issue. That was adding the registry settings to disable the loop back check. Method 2 in the workaround section of the KB article.
